REGISTRY OF RADI0 ACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE-NO.: NR19201115 DATE: November 9, 1971 pAGE 2 0F 4 1

DEVICE TYPE: Level Control System Source Holder DESCRIPTION:

The outer characteristics of the device are those of a right circular cylindet i

approximately 17 inches in length and 11 inches in diameter. The device cons) ts of lead and Mallory-1000 shielding contained within an outer steel case with a wall thickness of one quarter inch. The source is moved from its "off" position at the approximate center of the cylindrical shield mass to the "on" position toward one end of the shield by action of a pneumatically powered mechanism. The actuating mechanism acts on a " choke cable" drive line which passes through a spiral tube (within the shield mass) and is attached to the source container so as to push the source a distance of approximately five inches from the "off" position to the "on" position. The pneumatic drive mechanism works against an expanding coil spring so that electrical power failure or loss-of-air pressure will result in the contracting spring returning the source to the "off" position. In the "on" position the source within the soutte container is at the apex of a truncated cone collimator.

The actuating mechanism is enclosed in a compartment at the bottom of the cylindrical. device closed by a steel plate secured in place by 12 cap screws. An

" emergency" manual means for returning the source to the "off" position is provided by an extension of the actuating mechanism which protrudes through the bottom plate of the device. This extension may be rotated by the use of a

" Crescent" or open-end wrench. The "on" and "off" positions of the source are indicated by a red and a green painted area on the " lock tube" through wh'ich the actuator extension protrudes. .

The device is mounted by means of a bracket welded to the cylindrical surface of the device directly opposite the collimator aperture.

The "on" and "off" positions of the source are indicated by red and green lights at the control console which may be located some distance from the device itself

-and red and green lights at the operator's station near the steel mold where the device will be located. These lights are actuated by an electrical circuit which is completed by the closing of a microswitch which is activated by the pneumatic actuating mechanism.

LABELING: -

Each device bears two labels. One label consists of an aluminum plate 1/32 of an inch-in thickness attached to the device with four drive screws and Maring the following:

- DEVICE TYPE: Level Control _ System Source Holder LABELINr.(CONT'D):

1. The radiation symbol in color, magenta on a yellow background.
2. " CAUTION: RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL."
3. Designation of the nuclide, the activity, the date of measurement of the activity, the capsule number, and the model number of the device.
4. " REMOVAL OF LABEL IS PR0HIBITED."
5. "Brun Sensor Systems, Incorporated."

The second label on the device consists of a " Caution, Radiation Area" sign painted orto the outer surface of the device and including the radiation symbol in color, magenta on yellow.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

A prototype was cycled a total of 5000 times. After each 1000 cycles, the device source drive mechanism was disassembled and examined for wear, binding or other

_ malfunction.

The rubber air line has a melting point of 350 F which determines the temperature limit for the device.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

.With a nominal 400 millicurie cobalt-60 source in the device, radiation levels vary from a low of 0.05 mr/hr to a high of 2.5 mr/hr at one foot from the device 1

surface with the source in the "off" position. With the source in the "on" position, radiation levels vary from 0.1 mr/hr to 3.2 nr/hr outside the cone of primary radiation.

LIMITATIONS ANC/0R'0THER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The Brun Corporation has not described any guards or shielding inherent in the device installation to limit or prevent exposure to the primary beam of

, - radiation. Therefore, each individual applicant's proposed use of the device should be individually evaluated in this regard.

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE (CONT'0):

l Brun Sensor Systems has stated that they will install, survey, and leak test each device. They have also indicated a willingness to provide maintenance and repair servitas, including relocation.

REFERENCES:

Brun Sensor Systems furnishes an instruction manual with each device including a section entitled " Safety". This section covers general safety precautions related to the structure and method of operation of the device, warnings against tampering with the device in any way including attempts to make repairs to -the device or relocate the d.evice, and procedures to be followed in the event of an

" emergency" such as accidental damage to the device or device malfunction including failure of the source to return to the "off" position.
