The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

FIRE IN AUXILIARY TRANSFORMER At 5:48 p.m. (CDT) on September 3, 1987, a fire occurred in the STP, Unit 1 auxiliary transformer (UAT) and switchgear room 13.8 KV busing. The fire started when the UAT was being returned to service following an electrical outage. The operators observed a breaker trip and smoke from the VAT was reported shortly thereafter. The deluge system was activated and the site fire brigade responded and declared the fire out at 5:55 p.m. Damage appears to be extensive, but localized to the busing between the UAT and the 13.8 KV switchgear room. No personnel injuries occurred. The licensee was completing reactor vessel head installation following initial fuel loading when the fire occurred.

The licensee is investigating to determine the cause of the electrical fault and resulting fire.

The licensee issued a press release to local media shortly after the event occurred.

The state of Texas has been informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telecon from the SRI at ,

6:30 p.m. on September 3, 1987. Region IV has informed NRR.
