- DEVICE TYPE:- Sealed Sources-DESCRIPTION:

Cobalt-60 sources may be in the form of metal pellets,-wafers,;

y slugs, or wire. Cesium-137 sources may be in the form of cesium

- chloride powder or cesium absorbed on. inert glass or ceramic matrices. The radioactive material was loaded-into an inner 316L stainless steel capsule and was TIG weld sealed to form the inner

= encapsulation, then inserted into a stainless steel outer tube which;was also-TIG weld sealed. The outer diameter _ source series

. - ranges'from 0.244" (6.2 mm) to 0.946" (24 mm) and the height

. ranges-from 0.552" (14 mm) to 1.773" (4 5 mm) .

The total wall thickness is 0.043" (1.09 mm).

' PROTOTYPE TESTING:

Prototype capsules containing strontium-90 were tested and found~

to be free of-contamination exceeding 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) after being subjected to the following tests:

A. Thermal (1)- - Temperature Extremes: -40 F -(-40 C)- for 200 hrs, followed by 1832 P (100L*C) for 200 hrs.

(2). Chemical. corrosion: Pot &ssium Chloride 1was added to the active material and the capsule subjected to the test described in (1).

(3) Thermal Shock: 1832 F for 10 minutes and dipped into an oil bath at -4 0 F.

B. Mechanical i- -(1) Punch: 59' (10 s m) fall onto a plane' face of a hardened steel rod 0.117" (3.0 mm) in diameter.

(2) Drop: 110 successive drops at a height of 58" (147 cm) onto a steel surface.
