A9} f) PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR~ UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-III-86-10 Date 2/3/86 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without 4M v;rification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date. Facility: Indiana & Michigan Electric Co. Licensee Emergency Classification: D. C. Cook, Unit 2 - XX Notification of an Unusual Event Bridgman, Michigan Alert Docket No. 50-316 Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

Subject:

UNIT SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS FOR REPAIRS The licensee declared an Unusual Event at 8:15 a.m. on February 1, 1986 as a precautionary measure after a fire ensued on the 2CD auxiliary transformer at a bushing atop the unit. Due to a large quantity of smoke being drawn into the turbine building through the bus ducting system, the initial extent of the fire was unclear and offsite fire assistance was requested. The onsite fire brigade extinguished the fire (unassisted) by 8:27 a.m. and the Unusual Event was terminated at 9:03 a.m. Prior to the fire, Unit 2 had tripped from about 80% power at 8:11 a.m. due to a main electrical generator " unit differential" trip, which had been caused by an electrical fault on the 2CD auxiliary transformer, which was providing station power. Plant response to the trip was normal, including the " fast transfer" to start up power; no loss of power to the onsite buses occurred. The licensee is currently evaluating repairs and bus realignments to facilitate unit restart. No date for restart of the unit has been identified, but repairs are expected to take in excess of 48 hours. This information is current as of 12:00 noon (CST) on February 3, 1986. The State of Michigan will be notified, g d .. .. - ~ - gh CONTACT: W. Hehl issotimos M TS 388-5552 [N7 FTS 388-5716 DISTRIBUTION: H.
