The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
GENERATOR HYDR 0 GEN FIRE The NRC resident inspector reported that a hydrogen fire in the bushing area of the Unit 2 electric generator started at 10:25 a.m., E.S.T.
Prior to the fire, electricians were engaged in removing covers from the bush-ings.
(An area where there is normally no hydrogen.) Unit 2 was shut-down on November 9,1978, for scheduled maintenance and was in cold shut-down at the time of the fire. Unit I was operating at the time of the fire and continued to operate.
Plant personnel responded to the fire. They used carbon-dioxide and dry chemical fire extinguishers, then water to control and finally extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished by 11:00 a.m.
The resident inspector witnessed the firefighting.
The local fire department was not called.
Two electricians received burns but remained ambulatory.
They were taken to the local hospital, and have since returned' to work.

The exact cause and the extent of the damage is not known at this time.
O The resident inspector believes carbon-dioxide coolant was applied to the generator bushings through installed connections in time to prevent damage to the bushings.
l The inspector reported the plant fire brigade was able to keep the hydraulic system oil from igniting. The inspector reported the fire damage appears to be mainly water damage to insulation and electrical l
components rather than mechanical damage.
He reported no safety-related l
equipment or radioactive material was involved in the fire.
Numerous construction workers were onsite for scheduled work.

media interest is expected. The licensee plans to make a press release.
The NRC has notified the State of Michigan.
