. FUEL ASSEMBLY DAMAGE DURING TRANSFER TO SPENT FUEL POOL (UPDATE)

ThD licensee reported that the stuck fuel assembly was freed about 8 p.m. (CDT),

August 4, 1982, and transferred without incident to.the spent fuel storage pool.

A television examination of the assembly showed slight bowing of several fuel pins, but no evidence that the cladding was significantly damaged. There was no release of radioactivity associated with the incident. The assembly was placed in a normal storage location in the spent fuel storage rack about 10:30 p.m.

Tha assembly had been wedged between a cable and the device used to move the fuel from its normal vertical position into a horizontal position for movement into the fust transfer canal. The licensee freed the assembly by loosening the cable.

The resident inspector was at the plant site throughout the recovery activities.

There has been no news media interest. The licensee has issued a press release.

Region III does not plan to issue a press release.

The State of Michigan will be notified of the incident and freeing of the fuel assembly.

Rtgion III was kept informed of the recovery activities by the Resident Inspector.

This information is current as of 9 a.m. (CDT), August 5, 1982.
