Dear Sir:

This report summarizes documentation on file at the UTR-10 facility which has been reviewed and approved by the Radiation Safety Committee at Iowa State University.

SUBJECT:

Elimination of Inspection of Shim-safety Rod Position Potentiometer.

Ref: Letter to A. Giambusso, dated September 27, 1973, enclosed.

An inspection of the mounting hardware which attaches the shim-safety position potentiometer to the drive mechanism has been pe.rformed at six-month intervals since September, 1973. This inspectica procedure has now been eliminated for the following reasons:

1. No evidence of malfunction or any eendency to malfunction has been found in ten inspections; the success of the hardware modification has been proven.
2. The inspection procedure itself was potentially harmful to the drive mechanism since complete removal of the drive mechanism was required.
3. Elimination of this inspection procedure is supported by the Radiation Safety Committee.

, Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation October 17, 1978 Page 2 Yhe change in procedure does not involve a change in the Technical Specifi-cations nor does it constitute an unreviewed safety question. The change is necessary to reduce the wear and tear on a safety system unit.

Sincerely,

~
