Iowa State University Reactor Facility Ceasing Operations 1
Dear Sir:
The purpose of this letter is to inform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that Iowa State University intends to cease operating the UTR-10 nuclear reactor (License No. R-59) no later than May 15,1998. Iowa State University funher intends to the remove its LEU fuel from the reactor and place it into the facility's storage pits by June 30,1998.
Following the return of the LEU fuel to the U.S. Department of Energy, Iowa State University intends to decommission the UTR-10 reactor as soon as NRC approval is granted. The process to select a contractor to characterize the reactor facility and prepare the Decommissioning Plan has already commenced.
