Dear Mrs. Bennington:
%c purpose of this letter is to request your assistance in determining a new route for Iowa State University (ISU) to use to transport its LEU fuel to the Savannah River Site. ;
l The route that ISU used previously to ship reactor fuel traverses the state ofIllinois. Unfortunately, the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety has recently notified ISU that the fee to traverse the state has been 1 ,
increased from $1000 to $2500. For a small facility like ISU, this increased fee substantially increases our l shipping costs and ultimately places an unfair burden on the tax-payers in the state ofIowa.
It is now our intention to follow a route that proemia south into Missouri in order to avoid entering Illinois.
Your assistance is requested in determining the best route from southem Missouri to the Savannah River !
Site in South Carolita.
It should be noted that the upcoming shipment of LEU fuel will be in the Low Strc*rgic Significance category and is NOT Highway Route Controlled. The in-transit protection of the shipment will be j arranged as specified in 10 CFR 67 (g). :
