'CAVITATION TI!ST 12xl4x14*1/2 CVDS rumps*

For this test, Pump No. 270425 was set up in a closed loop on the large suppression tank. All set ups, instrumentation and testing

.s** _.. -*.: -- procedures were in strict accordance with the standards of Hydraul Institute and AS:.m Ptc 8.2. Upon completion of witness and NPSH testing, pump was disassembled .for* inspection. This inspection re vealed the following: *

  • Shaft Sleeve: Excellent condition - only minor scratches from small particles which passed through separator.

Bearing:

  • Excellent *condition
  • only minor scratches as on sleeve.
  • impeller: Excellent condition, except wear surfaces showed some evidence of wear from larger particles..
  • in water and lqwer wear surface showed one groove.

Seal: Excellent condition.

    • Wear Rinns
  • Case:
  • shaft:

Excellent - slight wear only

  • Total runout* less than 0. 0005"~

No damage was. evident from this test.

Pictures were *taken by G.E. personnel* and pump was reassembled for .

cavitation test. This test consisted of setting the desired capac:,

and then reducing the suction pressure to various NPSH values unti:

the impeller was cavi tating~ . l'hi-s was run at capacities *of 4000, _

5350, and 6.000 'GPM *. *Data. takbn at each point was suction and* dis-

  • ., -charge pressure, capacity, power input, vibration, and' water temp~ -

erature. See curve No. :26992 and pages 1 6 2 of ~est data for re*

  • At completion of testing, impeller was removed and inspected by G.l and Bingham personnel. There was no evidence of any damage to the impeller from cavi tating~ There was an indication of slight rubbi1

At conclusion of test*, impeller wa~ removed and inspected. by G. E.

and Bingham personnel. Again there w~s no sign of any cavitating damage to impeller. The only indication of .w~ar appeared on botto*

wear ring,. which seemed to be slightly "duller" in color, which in dicated possibly more rubbing. Bingham Inspection miked the diame of this area of impeller and it was within drawiug tolerance - 8.6 G.E. personnel photographed impeller.

Pump was Teassembled for second run-out cavitation test at 6000 GP and suction pr~ssure reduced to an NPSll value slightly below. the guaranteed value (about 40.2 ft.). The suction pressure was then further lowered until the pump capacity fell off to 5700 GPM. Thi cavitating condition was maintained for one hour. At this time, the suction pressure was lowered again until the pump capacity dro ped to 5400 GPM. The pump was run in this manner *for 30 minutes.

Pump was di*sassemblcd for inspection. - Condition of impeller was not* changed

  • bottom .imp~llcr wear surface still miked 8. 6070".

Shaft *leeve and bearing* in excellent condition, exce.pt for *a few minor scratches.

Cavitation test was considered complete and pump was released for sh~pmentl!

-*. All cavitation* testing *and inspection witnessed by A;, Spivak. 0th G;E.- personnel present .included Tom Day, Norm Peterson and Eldon Bingham. _ . * .
