Subject:

Irradiation Study of Boraflex Neutron Absorber Interim Test Data Date: June 25,1987 By: Jeff K. Woolley PURPOSE: To determine the effects on physical and dimensional properties resulting from radiation exposure to Boraflex neutron absorber at various interim levels through a cumulative dose of 1E+11 rads gamma. INTERIM OBSERVATIONS: 1. The length of Boraflex irradiated by cobalt 60 decreased at a slight but steady rate with increasing radiation exposure to a maximum of 0.75% at SE+8 rads gamma. 2. The length and width of Boraflex irradiated in the test reactor decreased an average of 2.18% & 1.94% respectively for total dose of SE+9 and rads gamma, and 2.24%'& 1.88% respect-ively at 1E+10 rads gamma. The limitations of measurement accuracy suggest the possibility that no dimensional change occurred between SE+9 and 1E+10 rads. 3. The hardness of the material irradiated in the test reactor increased to 100 Shore A, which exceeds the definition of the gauge. Additional hardness tests with a high point-loading device caused expected fracture of the samples. TEST METHOD: Samples used in the Cobalt 60 cave exposure test were nominally .075" x 2.5" x 12" in size. Radiation exposure was conducted to date on ten samples in a dry environment. High dose samples irradiated in the Ford Test Reactor at the University of Michigan were nominally.075" x 2" x 2" in size.
