Automatic Dampers AECM-80/254 On September 12, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company noti-fied Mr. M. Hunt of your office of a Potentially Paportable Defi-ciency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns the failure of a tack weld on a safety related autecatic air damper supplied by Pacific Air Products Company.

We are working with the constructor to determine reportab?lity of this item under 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21. Our Status Report is attached. We expect to file our Final Report on this matter by January 21, 1981.

  • STATUS REPORT FOR PRD-80/57 I. Description of the Deficiency i

The tack weld on the shaft of a saf ty t related automatic failed during an attempt to open the blade. The tac' weld connects the shaft to the blade bracket. The dampers are Q1X77F001A-A and

- Q1X77F003-C in the Safeguard Switchgear and Battery Rooms Ventila- -

tion System (X77). These (.ampers were supplied by Pacific Air Company under Bechtel Specification No. 9645-M-617.1.

II. Plans for Resolving the Deficiency Mississippi Power & Light Company is working with the construc-tor to evaluate the deficiency for reportability under 10CFR50.

i 55(e) and 10CFR21. The following staps will be performed and tracked under Bechtel Quality Action Request (QAR) No. F-234 to ensure that this item is adequately resolved:

1. Evaluate the deficiency for effect on iafety of plant opera-tions; 4 2. Determine the extent of the deficiency ; and
3. Perform corrective actions, including actions to prevent re-currence.

III. Status of Proposed Resolution The constructor has written to the supplier, Pacific Air Products, and requested additional information to fully investigate this deficiency. They were also requested to provide instructions for repair of air dampers.

MP&L should recaive this evaluation by January 1981.

IV. Reason for Delay in Final Report Investigative efforts are not complete.
