't1 .l. During development of the Automated Scan Plant SwRI uses vessel "as built" drawings to generate Scan Path Sketches which depict the extent of anticil'ated scanning and coverage.

These Sketches are drawn using a computer assisted drawing (CAD) program. At the time of initial planning, the required volume to be examined is det.ennined based on ASME Section XI IWB-2500 Examination Figures/Requirements.

The actual vessel dimensions such as thickness, weld length, weld crown width, etc. are converted from inches to device readout "counts".

As a function of weld typet device used, scan direction, beam direction and other parameters, the counts may represent inches or degrees from a given reference point. Also, the scan and increment offsets for each examination angle must be determined t::l assure the required coverage will be obtained.

From this infonnation, the planned increment and scan axis parameters for upper limit, lower limit, interval, units, and counts per unit are determined and documented in the SwRI Scan Plan under Examination Parameters.

When automated scanning commences, the operator inputs the planned parameters into the computers which control the mechanical movements of the device. The operator also documents the a&Will scan and increment, start and stop counts that were perfonned.

After completion of the examinationt the Data Analyst will document the device counts for scan and increment positions to verify that data exists for the area actually scanned. TL is from the final, actual device readout counts for which data exists that coverage obtained is calculated.

The actual device readout counts for scan increment, start, and stop positions are then tabulated for each examination performed.

The coverage obtained must be determined for each examination perfonned on that particular volume. When the Limitations Report is developed, the device counts are then converted back into the units (inches or degrees) used for scan plan developme'nt.

The computer scan path sketches used for the initial scan plan development are then used to plot the beam angles and beam directions.

The CAD system allows the operator to select points from a cross-sectional view to automatically calculate square inches for the area defined by the points selected.

The length of the volume will then be multiplied by the area in square inches to calculate volume in cubic inches. The volume examined is then divided by the volume required to be examined and the result reported as percent of coverage.

This calculation is performed for all beam angles and beam directions for each weld examined.

The percent of coverage for an examination area that is comprised of different volumes being examined by several angles and directions can be reported many different ways. At the time of the Salem Unit 2 automated examinations, the chosen method of reporting limitations was to the percent coverage for each angle and directiont then show the combined coverage as a function beam direction, (CW, CCW, UP, and DOWN). The combined coverage was determined by adding the 50/70 (near-surface) percent coverage from a given direction to the highest percent coverage for either the 45 or 60 degree from the same beam direction.

Because the 50170 search unit is applied only for the inner 25% of "t", the maximum coverage that can be obtained with the 50170 is 25%. Likewise, the maximum volume for which the 45 and 60 degree can be credited is 75%. The coverage obtained with the 50no and the angle beams combined is therefore 100%. This reporting method has since been refined and enhanced to reflect the average coverage of all examination angles and beam directions used for a given weld. At the time of the Salem Unit 2 Report, calculations performed by the computer were not written or recorded as hardcopy information, therefore, an exact duplication of those calculations may not be possible.

However, the SwRI EDAS Exam and Review Records, which contain the necessary data for computation of coverage, are on file and can be retrieved at any time.
