J. Rausch, of your office, of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site.

The deficiency concerns the structural hadequacy of VLK Air Ex-tractors used in ventilation systems at ,GNS.

Our investigation into this condition is in progress. At-tached is our interim report. We expect to complete the investi-gation and submit a final report by March 12, 1981.

INTERIM REPORT TO PRD-80/63 I. Description of Deficiency i During installation and operation of supply registers in a non-

safety related system, the VLK Air Extractors proved to be structurally inadequate. Specifically, when the extractors

,

are installed to direct air flow vertically downward to air registers in the bottom of the duct, the weight of the assembly bears on a single vane, causing it to bend, thus allowing the vanes to shut, thereby closing off the air flow to the register.

Similarly, in the horizontal application, the vane assemblies
have a tendency to sag, especially for vane assemblies which j are 18 inches or longer. Although the problem was identified j on a non-safety related system, the same type of air extractors are used in safety-related systems. The NRC Region II was noti-

. fled of'this problem on October 15, 1980.

II. Approach to Resolution of the Problem 1 The Architect / Engineer will investigate the cause of the problem j in concert with the vendor and determine the actions necessary

.

to correct the problem and to preclude recurrence. Based on this d'e termination, any required modifications will be made to

'

  • the air extractors.

i

III. Status of Proposed Resolution ,

<

The vendor has been contacted and requested to perform an in-depth investigation of the condition and to provide the Archi-tect/ Engineer with the results of their investigation.

IV. Reason for Delaying Final Report The vendor investigation has not been completed.

V. Projected Completion Date

,

A final report is expected to be submitted by March 12, 1981.
