TRAIN CARRYING TMI-2 SHIPPING CASKS IN MINOR ACCIDENT On Tuesday, March 24, 1987, at approximately 5:35 AM Central Standard Time (CST), the train carrying two (2) shipping casks containing TMI-2 core debris struck an automobile in St. Louis, Missouri. The shipment is the seventh in a program sponsored and conducted by the DOE to transport core debris to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in Scoville, Idaho, for research and storage. The train was travelling at a slow speed (25-30 mph). The driver of the automobile sustained minor injuries and received a traffic citation from local authorities. The train's engine received minor damage but the shipping casks were not damaged. The Department of Health for the City of St. Louis performed radiation surveys on the shipping casks and determined that there was no release of radioactive materials. The carrier (Union Pacific Railroad) inspected the train's engine and determined that it could remain in service. The train got underway approximately 45 minutes later (@ 6:22 AM CST). The DOE notified all States along the route of this event. The incident is receiving news and TV coverage.
