GPU Nuclear Corporation Notification of Unusual Event Three Mile Island, Unit 1 Alert Docket Number 50-289 Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

DRUG TESTING AT TMI On March 19, 1987, the licensee notified Region I of an on going drug investigation, and has kept Region I briefed on a frequent basis. Licensee investigation to date has not indicated involvement of licensed operators. NRC Region I plans to review the results of the licensee investigation when it is complete. The licensee has indicated that they will issue a press release after completion of the investigation.

On June 1, a local TV station was apparently told by an anonymous source that workers had been suspended as a result of drug testing at TMI. The TV station (WHTM, Channel 27, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) queried licensee and the NRC resident office personnel on the matter. The licensee ackne-iedged that a drug investigation and testing are occurring and that the results would be made available when the investigation is complete. The NRC resident office acknowledged the same to the reporter and referred the reporter to the licensee for information on the suspensions.

Region I PA0 has responded to WHTM also.

This PN is issued for information only due to the media interest in the licensee's on going inv2stigation. NRC Region I will continue to follow the licensee's investigation. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been notified.
