50320-870504 May 4, 1987 NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-TMI-87-03 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

DEFUELING WATER HOSE RUPTURE At approximately 0430 on May 3,1987, a 4 inch diameter reinforced rubber pump discharge hose ruptured on the defueling water cleanup system. About 150 gallens of unfiltered reactor coolant were spilled. The water contains 3.36 microcuries per milliliter of activity, mostly strontium-90 and cesium-137.
Three persons were sprayed and contaminated by the water from the ruptured hose. Two persons were decontaminated successfully, one individual has some low level skin contamination remaining. Assessments of the skin contaminations and possible uptakes are in progress by the licensee.
The resulting contamination on the defueling platform was about 100 mrad beta-gamma and 1000 dpm alpha. General area contamination on the 347' elevation and on the 305' elevation walkways was measured to be about 200,000 dpm beta-gamma and 400 dpm alpha.
D fueling has been suspended pending decontamination.
A licensee critique of the event is scheduled today.
