SOUTH CAROLINA IDENTIFIES IMPROPERLY SOLIDIFIED WASTE AT THE'BARNWELL 1 DISPOSAL SITE I An October 26, 1987 inspection by the South Carolina Department'of health and Environmental Control identified an improperly solidified shipment of Class .B (10 CFR 3' 61.56) waste from TMI, Unit 2. The waste, sludge solidified with cement, was l transported to the Barnwell disposal site from TMI-2. As a~ result, the State has. ,
prohibited further shipments of solidified sludge to Barnwell pending corrective-actions by the licensee to preclude a recurrence. Other low-level-' radioactive wastes i from TMI-2 are sti11' being acce'pted for disposal.. ..The state inspection revealed that - j the sludge, packaged in a steel liner, exhibited a moist, putty-like consistency..- a Corrective actions are' to be submitted to the state no later than November 25, 1987.
NRC site inspectors are reviewing the event and the licensee's' response.
