50320-8501028 October 28, 1985 NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PN0-TMI-85-10 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

Subject:

DEFUELING OPERATIONS TO BEGIN The initial phase of defueling the damaged reactor core at Three Mile Island Unit 2 is scheduled to begin this week. The defueling will involve the use of specially designed tools and equipment and will be performed by operators specially trained in defueling procedures. This phase of defueling will involve manipulation of the partial fuel assemblies in preparation for loading into canisters, designed for storage and shipment of the damaged fuel. Shipping of the loaded canisters by rail to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory is scheduled for next spring.

Media interest may occur because of public sensitivity to TMI related events. The licensee has issued a press release.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and the NRC plans to continue monitoring events as they occur.
