South Texas Project d

Units 1&2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Third Interim Report Concerning the Stop Work Order on Safety Related Welding l '

On April 11, 1980, pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e), Houston Lighting & Power Company notified your office of an item concerning a stoo work crder issued on safety related welding at the South Texas Project site.

Since the initial report was made, major corrective actions have been taken.

These are documented in the correspondence identified in attachment 1.

The current ;tatus of safety related welding is:

(1) AWS: A limited restart of Category I Structural Steel welding was begun on October 6,1980 following receipt of your letter of approval dated on October 3,1980. Based on the success' .1 perfomance of that work and your October 22, 1980 letter, Category I Structural Steel (AWS01.1) welding is being performed in accordance with the approved 12-week Work Plan.

(2) ASME: No safety related ASME welding has been perfomed since issuance of the stop work order. Corrective actions have been implemented and on November 21, 1980, the NRC approved a limited restart of ASME ?i,ne and Pipe Support welding.

The next interim report will be submitted to your office on April 15, 1981.

If there are any questions concerning this item, please contact Mr. Michael E. Powell at (713) 676-8592.
