Ginna CRDR Supplemental Report dated July 14, 1987

Dear Mr.Stahle:

As a part of the Control Room Design Review (CRDR), an extensive sound level survey of the Ginna Control Room was performed.

The results of the study indicated that certain alarm systems did not'fall within the guidelines of NUREG-0700, thereby, requiring system modifications.

The referenced submittal described those modifications, and others, and committed.

that work associated with Ginna Control Room alarm systems would be completed by June 30, 1988.The modifications were to change certain Control Room alarms to achieve distinguishable sound levels when compared to the annunciator alarm which was to be the reference.

The referenced letter also stated that the annunciator alarm level was not 10 dBA above background level as suggested, by the NUREG, but approximately 5 dBA above the background noise level.RG&E justified leaving the annunciator alarm at this level since it was adequately distinctive and non-irritating within its environs. All other alarms would then be set at the required.+2.5 dBA.of the annunciator, alarm level. All modifications were completed as scheduled, however, testing of the alarm systems scheduled for June 30 was cancelled because of.equipment failure.Subsequent tests of the background sound level indicated a 1 dBA increase in the level over that of the April 1987 survey (initial survey)and concurrently showed that the annunciator sound level'had decreased below the initial survey. The sound differential, therefore, was unacceptable.

8808120}30 8SOS02 PDR ADGCK 05000244 P PDC Attempts to restore the existing annunciator alarm systems to an acceptable level have been unsuccessful.

As a result, RG&E will design and install a new adjustable annunciator alarm. This alarm is presently scheduled to be installed and all alarm systems tested by the end of September 1988.If you have any concerns or questions regarding this matter, please call Charles J.Mambretti (716)724-8071.Very truly yours, Robert C.Me redy General Manager Nuclear Production xc: U.S.Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region I 475 Allendale Road King of Prussia, PA 19406 Ginna Senior Resident Inspector
