NRC COMBINED INSPECTION 50-272/86-05 and 50-311/86-05 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 and 50-311 Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) is in receipt of your letters dated April 30 and March 24, 1986, which withdrew a Notice of Violation regarding a failure to verify leak testing of radioactive waste shipment packaging and which transmitted a Deviation regarding training of quality control inspectors, respectively.

Your March 24, 1986 letter also included an unresolved item related to the radiological controls associated with the handling and preparation of primary reactor coolant system demineralizer resins for disposal. We recognize your concern and are addressing its resolution.

ATTACHMENT 1 PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS SALEM GENERATING STATION RESPONSE TO NOTICE OF DEVIATION Your letter, dated March 24, 1986, identified a deviation from commitments to IE Bulletin No. 79-19, "Packaging of Low-Level Radioactive Waste For Transport and Burial." As stated therein, the deviation was the result of a failure to provide training in changes to NRC and DOT regulations (which were effective in 1983) for two (2) quality control inspectors involved in five (5) radioactive waste shipments in 1985.
