The unit contains two sealed borosillicate glass disc sources, each having an internal coating of luminescent materials. The source is filled with a 94%

' tritium and less than 1% tritium oxide mixture at an internal pressure that does not exceed 2 atmospheres (STD). The sources are contained within a plastic housing with each source surrounded by a transparent cushioning material. A plastic crystal provides an outer protective cover for the holder. Jhg plastic unit is placed into a metal body and neoprene gaskets are used to afford additional impact resistance. The metal housing is crimp sealed closed.

LABELING:

A metallic name plate is attached to the device by both adhesive and drive screws. l The following information is on the nameplate: the wording, " Danger Caution-Radioactive Material," manufacturers name and address, part number, vendor code, isotope and activity, date of assay, and serial number.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The device will be attached to the arms of an air refueling paradogue to outline inflight refueling drogues on a C-130 aircraft.  !

' PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The sealed luminous source was tested to the requirement of ANSI N540. The source achieved a classification designation of T4GClX4X444. Additionally, the source contained in its source housing was tested the requirements of Military Standard (mil std) 8100. These tests consisted of:

o Discoloration - ANSI N540 o High temperature mil std - 160"F o Low temperature mil std - -65'F o Thermal shock - ANSI N540 level 4 o Altitude mil std 35,000 ft.

o Impact - ANSI N540 level 4 o Vibration - ANSI N540 level 4

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

The Department of the Air Force contract design data must be met befbrh shipment of a device to the Department of the Air Force. }

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

o The device shall be distributed by the Department of the Air Force for use by the Department of Defense anywhere in the USA, o Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the i licensing authority. I o The license reviewer should clarify that the contractor has a valid NRC or Agreement State license and that authorizes the manufacture of this type device.

o This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed or transferred without the written consent of the NRC.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Based on our review of the information and test data cited below, that the device dose rates do not pose a radiation hazard, we conclude that the drogue light design is acceptable for custom licensing purposes.

Furthennore, we conclude that theldevice would be expected to maintain its containment integrity for the normal conditions and use specified in this certificate.
