On May 26, 2011, a Category 1 public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Omaha Public Power District (OPPD, the licensee) at NRC Headquarters, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the pre-licensing meeting was to discuss OPPD's planned submittal of an amendment request for Fort Calhoun Station (FCS), Unit NO.1. Specifically, the licensee discussed its intention to adopt the risk-informed, performance-based alternative described in "National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 805," as permitted by paragraph 50.48(c) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations. | |||
The licensee's presentation slides are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under ADAMS Accession No. ML111570296. The licensee discussed the project overview and schedule which includes plans to submit the NFPA-805 application to the NRC on June 9, 2011. | |||
The licensee presented information on the NFPA 805 transition project overview, current fire protection licensing basis, fire protection program transition, compliance with I\JFPA 805 and fire probabilistic risk assessment (PRA). The licensee stated that it planned to use analyses that were under review by the Industry New Methods Peer Review Panel for its fire PRA During a follow-up teleconference on May 27, 2011, the NRC staff informed the licensee that if it decided to use methodologies unreviewed by the industry panel, the application might not pass acceptance review since the methods review by the industry panel had not been initiated and thus the acceptability of the method would be an open item. The licensee informed the NRC staff that it would consider this information and inform the project manager, Lynnea Wilkins, of its decision. | |||
