Dear Mr. O' Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station File 0270/15525/15526 PRD-79/07, Status Report #4 J Inadequate Circuit Separation AECM-80/33 On March 23, 1979, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr.

J. K. Rausch of your office of a potentially reportable deficiency at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station construction site. The deficiency concerns circuit separation discrepancies found in Unit 1 and 2 Power Generation Control Complexes.

The deficiency, currently under investigation by the General Electric Company, initially concerned non-compliance with Regulatory Guide 1.75 and IEEE Standard 384 in that improper separation was noted with redundant class IE wiring Div.1 and Div. 4, terminating on comon device FK-483 in panel 2H13P692.

During the investigation the deficiency was noted also to exist on panels 2H13P693 and 2H13P694. Corrective actions, thus far, include wire redressing, conduit installation, and wire relocation. Fire tests have been conducted on relay FK-48B and its redundant counterparts to insure

, compliance with IEEE 384, specifically paragraph 5.6.2. Additional fire tests remain to be conducted. The preliminary evaluation indicates that safe operation would not have been adversely affected had this deficiency remained uncorrected.

Further investigation is required to evaluate the extent of this deficiency, required corrective actions, and safety implications. The detailed description of the work associated with this deficiency can be found in General Electric Design Record File (DRF) H13-79. -
