Grand Gulf Nuclear Station i Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-41,6/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/67, Installation of Venti-lation Fire Dampers, Status Report AECM-SO/301 On November 3, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company noti-fied Mr. J. Rausch of your office of a Potentially Reportable De-ficiency (PFS) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construc-tion site regarding the installation of fire dampers in ventilation systems.

We are continuing to investigate the safety implications and reportability of this matter under 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFRg. Our status report is attached. Bechtel Quality Assurance Request QAR F-257 has been assigned to track this item. We expect to provide z our final determination of reportability and proposed corrective actions by April 30, 1981.

Attachment to AECM-80/301 4 Page 1 of 1 STATUS REPORT FOR PRD-80/67 I. Description of the Deficiency An NRC inspection of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Statio'n (416/80-25, 417/80-15) revealed that fire dampers in HVAC systems are being installed on Unit I without sufficient drawings or procedures.

These installation documents lack design detail to adequately define size and location of welds or fasteners. The potential exists, therefore, that seismic requirements may not have been

met in installing the fire dampers.

i II. Approach to Resolution i

Mississippi Power & Light Company is working with the construc-i tor to resolve this deficiency by:

1. Issuing a Stop Work until corrective actions have been de-t termined,

2. Determining the extent of the deficiency,

3. Eialuating impact on safety of plant operations, and

4. Determining and ibplementins corrective actions and actions' to preclude occurrence.

III. Status of Proposed Resolution i

Stop Work Notice 24 was issued on October 30, 1980 for installa-tion of fire dcmpers. This 5 top Ucrk will remain in effect until corrective actions have been determined. Additio'nally, Bechtel Power Corporation is'. identifying and documenting the locations where this deficiency may exist at GGNS. An evaluation of the impact on safety of plant operations is in progress.

These actions are being tracked on Bechtel Quality Assurance Request QAR F-257.
