File Code Gl.I1.2 Water Discharge Permit No. WPO409 River Bend Station - Unit i On the morning of Thursday, March 10, 1988, analysis of a sample collected at 10:05 a.m. indicated a Total Residual Chlorine (TRC) of less than 0.1 mg/l at Outfall 005 of the above-referenced permit. The permitted minimum TRC at Outfall 005 is 0.8 mg/1.

At 2:50 p.m. on the sane day, a sample was collected and analysis showed a TRC of 0.85 mg/l resulting in approximately five hours of non-compliance.

The excursion apparently occurred as a result of higher than normal flow, associated with heavy rainfall on the preceding two days, which depleted the hypochloritt tablets out of the bottom of the chlorinator tube. The tablete absorbed water which caused them to swell slightly end fail to drop to the bottom of the chlorinator tube.

The excursion was corrected by reloading t'e chlorinator tube with dry hypochlorite tablets. Evaluation of the chlorination system at Outfall 005 will be conducted to determine appropriate corrective actions to prevent a recurrence.
