Brunswick Unit 1 Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-325 Alert Southport, North Carolina Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS '

Carolina Power and Light (CP&L) has brought Brunswick Unit 1 to cold shutdown to repair a d: graded reactor recirculation pump seal. A six-day outage is expected.

CP&L decided to keep the unit out of service and make the repairs after the reactor scrammed from 100 percent power at 8:19 a.m. (EST) yesterday. The scram was triggered by a turbine trip caused by a spurious high reactor water level signal, which CP&L, is investigating.

Both the high pressure. coolant injection and reactor core isolation cooling systems initiated _to maintain reactor vessel water level after the scram. All engineered safe- ,

guards systems functioned as designed. Reactor pressure was controlled by the manual lifting of two relief valves.

Brunswick Unit 2 is shut down for refueling.

CP&L is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The State of North Carolina has been informed.

This information is current as of 9:00 a.m. today.
