PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PN0-II-85-91 l

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

ACTIONS IN RESPONSE TO HURRICANE GLORIA Region II has dispatched an einergency response specialist to the Brunswick nuclear power plant to set up high frequency radio coccunications between the plant and NRC offices if regular telephone comunications are disrupted by Hurricane Gloria, l' nit I at the plant is shut down for refueling and CP&L officials began shutting down Unit 2 at 8:00 a.m. today. They expect the facility to be in cold shutdown between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. tonight.

The National Weather Service reported as of 9:00 a.m. (EST) today that the stonn was 1ccated at latitude 30.1 degrees north and longitude 75.7 degrees west, which is about 350 miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The hurricane continues to move at 15 miles per hour and is turning gradually toward the north. Wind gusts approach 155 miles per h0Ur.

The resident inspector's office is staffed, and additiona. regional support is remaining at the site to provide assistance if required.

Media inquires have been received by the licensee and the Region II office. Both the licensee and the NRC are resperding to media inquiries.

Region II is keeping the State of North Carolina informed on a continuing basis. Other major licensees in the predicted path have are being kept informed.
