, July 25, 1988 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION 0F EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PN0-II-88-43C This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

COMPLETION OF AUGMENTED INSPECTION AT BRUNSWICK This is an update to PN0-II-88-438, issued on July 22, 1988.

The Augmented Inspection Team that was dispatched to the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) on July 15, 1988, departed the site on July 22, 1988, after an informal debriefing with the licensee on the inspection findings. All onsite review has been completed. The team continues to review several modification packages and licensee posi-tions regarding the DC motor deficiencies. The formal exit for the inspection has been scheduled for August 18, 1988, at the licensee's company headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Unit 1 is presently operating at full power. Unit 2 was shut down on July 23, 1988, to affect repairs of the F006 high pressure coolant injection valve. Motor replacement and starting resistors removal have been completed. Also, both F017A and F017B residual heat removal valves have been inspected with no observed discrepancies in the motor / handwheel engagement clutch mechanism. Unit 2 is expected to commence restart late on July 26, 1988.

The 24-hour onsite NRC coverage remains in effect.

Both the licensee and the NRC are prepared to respond 'o media inquiries.
