July 28, 1982 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION 0F EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-82-88 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

FACILITY: Carolina Power & Light Company Licensee Emergency Classification:

Brunswick Units 1 and 2 Notification of Unusual Event Docket Nos. 50-324 & 50-325 Alert Southport, North Carolina Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

FAILED COMPONENTS ON DIESEL GENERATORS The licensee has reported this updated information regarding a failure of the shaft-driven cooling pump on emergency diesel generator No. 2, caused by sheared cap screws and broken dowel pins in the pump coupling:

Metallurgical examination of cap screws and dowel pins in diesel generator No. 2 indicates that the failure was probably due to metal fatigue brought about by the number of starts (1400) of the generator since installation. As a result of these findings, Nordberg, the diesel generator manufacturer, has recommended that coupling cap screws and dowel pins be replaced after 1200 starts.

The licensee has replaced cap screws and dowel pins on diesel generator numbers 2 and 4, where broken screws and cracked dowel pins were found after disassembly. lhe disassembly of diesel generator No.1, which is now under way, also has disclosed some broken cap screws. Diesel generator No. 3 will be disassembled and checked in the same fashion. The licensee stated that such components on all four diesel generators will be replaced before the units return to power.

Brunswick Unit 2 was shut down in April for refueling, and Unit I was shut down on July 16 for surveillance tests (PNO-II-82-85, dated July 20,1982).

! Region II believes this matter has generic applicability to other Nordberg diesel generators and has informed IE, NRR and Region IV.

t Media interest is not expected, although media coverage continues on the surveillance testing issue. Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans a press release.

The State of North Carolina has been inforced.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the resident inspector at 9 a.m. on July 28.
