INITIATION OF REACTOR SHUTDOWN DUE TO INOPERABLE SAFETY SYSTEMS On May 16, at 8:38 p.m., a reactor shutdown was initiated and an unusual event was d:clared after one of two diesel generators and one of four low pressure coolant injection (LPCI) pumps were declared inoperable.

The."B" diesel generator was declared inoperable following a successful routine surveillance

> test,~because a lubricating oil circulation pump would net operate. The pump is needed to warm and lubricate the diesel during standby periods. The LPCI pump was declared inoperable after dye penetrant indications were found on a pipe support weld. The shutdown and unusual event were terminated less than four hours later at 12:17 a.m., May 17, after the "B" diesel generator was returned to service. Repairs to the LPCI pipe support were near complete as of

'7:30 a.m.

The Commonwealth'of Massachusetts was notified by the licensee.

This cvent was discussed on the 11 p.m. evening news last night on a Boston

? television station, after news media learned about it from transmissions on p31tce radio. The licensee also has responded to inquiries.
