REACTOR TRIP About 10:26 a.m. ,, July 18, 1989, operators manually tripped the reactor from 50 percent power after loss of the operating air ejectors caused a decreasing condenser vacuum condition. Plant systems responded normally to the trip; no ECCS or safety-relief valve actuation was needed and none occurred. The plant is in stable hot shutdown and the licensee is beginning an evaluation and post-trip review. The cause of the air ejector failure was not immediately evident; however, air ejectors were being shifted at the time due to slightly degraded vacuum.
The NRC Restart staff is following up on-site. The licensee has issued a press release, and Region I has responded to media inquiries.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been notified.
