Subject:

MEDIA INTEREST IN INADVERTENT DEGRAPPLING OF FUEL BUNDLE g On June 26 at approximately 4:00 a.m., with the plant in refueling opera-tions, an irradiated fuel bundle became degrappled from the refuel bridge handling device while being placed in a vacant spent fuel pool rack loca-tion. The fuel bundle dropped freely approximately 11 feet into the appropriate rack position. The fuel bundle was being returned to the spent fuel pool following an unsuccessful attempt to place the fuel in the reactor core. The fuel grapple mechanism had failed to unlatch the fuel bundle in three previous attempts with the bundle inserted in the core. No increase in radiation levels was detected. The licensee has secured all fuel movement operations.
