PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION March 17,1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-78-53 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

FACILITY: Carolina Power and Light Company Brunswick, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-325 Southport, North Carolina

SUBJECT:

PRIMARY SYSTEM BLOWDOWN ,

The licensee reported that following a reacter trip and isolation of the reactor coolant system on March 13, two Target Rock safety-relief valves i operated as required to relieve the reactor pressure. Ons of'the safety- Lm relief valves fa'iled to reseat and remained open until reactor pressure "

had decreased to 200 psig. Suppression pool cooling was initiated. The r'

maximum pool temperature was reported to be 124 degrees F. The reactor

\_ - cooldown rate was not exceeded. The safety-relief valve was replaced prior to return to power.

Media interest is not expected. A news release-is not planned by the  !

licensee nor NRC. The State of North Carolina has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Operations Maintenance Superintendent at 9:10 a.m. on March 17, /

1978.
