SUBJECT:

SIMMARY OF MEETING HELD ON SEPTEMBER 17, 1985 TO DISCUSS FIRE PROTECTION AT CABLE CONCENTRATIONS The applicant requested this meeting to discuss with NRC staff a proposed approach to improving the fire protection provided in areas of cable concentrations. The attendees at the meeting are shown in Enclosure 1. No presared audio-visual aids were used.

Discussion:

The applicant reiterated their position that the fire protection measures currently described in the Fire Hazards Analysis Report are adequate.

However, additional measures have been considered to meet the staff guidelines. The applicant made the following commitments in the effort to meet the guidelines:

1. The applicant has connitted to provide fixed automatic fire suppression systems in the Cable Spreading Rooms and the Cable Vaults. These systems will be sprinkler heads mounted at the ceiling with full coverage of the room. The systems will be designed as Seismic Category II. The specific design criteria for these systems will be submitted in the near future.
2. The applicant connitted to provide additional infonnation regarding concentration of cable outside of the cable spreading rooms and the cable vaults which will identify the locations in the plant that have concentrations of more than six twenty-four inch wide cable trays in close proximity. For each such locations, the information will:

(1) describe the fixed automatic suppression system protecting the configuration or the physical attributes of the configuration which justify the omission of a Tixed automatic suppression systems.

(2) describe the physical attributes of the configuration that limit the accessibility of an effective hose stream or fire brigade and make manual suppression difficult.
