SUMMARY
OF MEETING TO DISCUSS THE PRA STUDY FOR THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT (STP) 0'n August 8, 1989, the staff and its contractor, Sandia Laboratories met with
-the licensee'at Sandia to. discuss the PRA study for STP. The purpose of the meeting was for the licensee to acquaint the staff and Sandia with the methodology and format used in the study in order to facilitate its review. is a listing of meeting attendees.
The. licensee made an overview presentation about STP highlighting unique features of the plants, in particular; two slide along units, few shared systems', the. concept of the 3 train safety systems, an RHR system completely inside containment, and a 4 train concept for the auxiliary feedwater system. is a copy of the handouts used in the presentation.
The licensee discussed the differences between the STP PRA study and the one previously done for Indian Point. Sandia had_ reviewed the Indian Point Study so the discussion provided a point of reference for the STP review. Areas discussed were support system modeling, treatment of common cause, plant event tree models,. treatment of external events, and treatment of operator actions.
A general. summary of the results of the STP PRA wgre presented. The total core damage frequency was estimated to be 1.7x10~ events / reactor-year, with the major contribution (over 99%) coming from internal initiating events. Of the core damage event sequences considered in the study, 53% were initiated by a loss of offsite power. The second largest contributor was a steam generator tube rupture (91).
Handouts used in the discussions are included in.
The license also " walked" the reviewers thru an event sequence.
