August 26, 1958 Docket Nos. 50-498

and 50-499 LICENSEE
Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P)

FACILITY: South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2

SUBJECT:

STATUS OF STUDIES ON BMI THIMBLE TUBE WEAR The subject meeting was held on August 10, 1988. A list of attendees is included as the Enclosure.

Further information on the short and long term corrective actions for the BMI Thimble Tube wear problems was provided by Houston Light & Power Company (HL&P) and Westinghouse in a meeting with the staff on August 10, 1988. Westinghouse indicated that a gap between the flow limiter and the lower fuel assembly appears to be the primary mechanism that caused the higher flow and excitation of the thimble tubes. This was supported by the data results of lab flow tests. To correct this mechanism at STP, the flow limiters will be removed and a larger 0.0. thimble tube installed. This configuration has been shown not to experience excitation during testing. Additionally, magnetic ball check and manual isolation valves will be installed in each tube. The effectiveness of these actions will be monitored by a program of continued eddy current testing.

These modifications will be made to Unit 1 at the next refueling outage, except for the manual isolation valves which are to be instelled in September 1988.

Because of the installation sequence, Unit ? will make the modifications after fuel load but before initial reactor pressurization.

Much of the discussion was proprietary as was the licensee's handout.

Consequently, it is not included as an enclosure here. However, a copy is retained in the project manager's files.
