THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN OFFICE oF PLANNING SERVICES AUSTIN, TEXA$ 787I2-IIII Nain Building 206 Phone 312-471-1292 April 15, 1985 Mr. Cecil Thomas Standardization and Special Projects Branch Division of Licensing Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Re: Docket #50-602

Dear Mr. Thomas:

The following financial information is provided as an amendment to information paragraph (f) of the General Information submitted in The University of Texas license application dated November 9, 1983 and subsequent submittals.

Funding approval for major changes in The University of Texas at Austin physical plant is the responsibility of The University of Texas System Board of Regents. Funds for preliminary planning for the Docket No. 50-602 project were initially approved on October 13, 1983 and subsequently increased on February 9, 1984 to $500,000 based on the estimated total project cost of $5,000,000. That cost estimate includes funding for demolition of the extant facility.

Authorization to prepare final plans, appropriation of total project funding, authorization for bidding, and construction contract award by The University of Texas System Board of Regents is subject to two factors under the purview of the NRC. One is the issuance by the NRC of the requested construction permit. The other is an assurance by the NRC to the degree possible that an operating license would be subsequently issued upon satisfactory completion and inspection of the newly constructed facility.

Most of our major capital expenditures for facilities projects are made from proceeds from Permanent University Fund Bonds. The value of the PUF exceeds $2 billion, and the proposed project funding of $5 million is relatively 85j42303] Q 4 2 1 0 I

Mr. C cil Thomas Page 2 April 15, 1985 small compared to many of.our projects. At this time U.T. Austin has $66 million in projects under design development, including the Docket No. 50-602 project, and nearly $174 million in projects now under construction. It is a reasonable anticipation with appropriate approvals by the NRC that The University of Texas System Board of Regents would opt to proceed with this project to offer improved facilities for our Nuclear Engineering program as well as to free up the much needed central campus site now occupied by the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory.
