Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Equipment Supported from Block Walls (#84)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This interim report concerning the problem of supporting equipment f rom block walls has been prepared to provide the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. H. M. Wescott's office of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. D. Ferencz, Acting Supervisor -

Construction Quality Assurance on December 13, 1982.

At that time, it was discovered that portions of the security system (control panels, card readers, pull boxes and 4" rigid conduit) had been installed on block walls. In addition, fire detection devices had been mounted to the same walls.

Such installations conflict with Edison's response to NRC Bulletin 80-11 (Edison Letter EF2-52623 from H. Tauber). This response states, in part, that piping and equipment shall not be supported on block walls. Where items are installed on the walls, they must either weigh less than 2% of the wall weight or be included in the design calculations.

The Edison Architectural / Civil Group completed its analysis of all equipment attached to the block walls. Based on this analysis, the appropriate engineering disciplines identified their equipment and applicable QA Levels. Change papers are being prepared to remove all QA Level I equipment and some of the other equipment from these block walls. When these removals are completed, this item will be ready for review.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, will be sent when further information is available. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. G. M. Trahey, Assistant Director - Project Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours, 7
