Atwood & Morrill Main Steam Isolation Valves Gentlemen:

Confirming our telecon of 6/6/86, Atwood & Morrill has been advised by the spring manufacturer that the cause of the failure of four external closing springs on Main Steam Isolation Valves supplied to Detroit Edison - Enrico Fermi 2 was due to quench cracks developed during the manufacturing process.

As we advised you, springs from this same manufacturer were supplied an Main Steam Isolation Valves manufactured by Atwood & Morrill on both PWR and BWR nuclear plants in the U. S.

As promised, the attached list details the utility, station, quantity of valves and size of these Main Steam Isolation Valve <, supplied.

This letter will serve as a preliminary notice to NRC. A complete report will be forthcoming next week providing more detailed information. Our l
