FEB 81982 Docket Nos. 50-317 and 50-318 Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr.

Vice President - Supply Baltimore Gas & Electric Company P. O. Box 1475 Baltimore, Maryland 21203

Dear Mr. Lundvall:

We have completed our review of the Inservice Test Program (ITP) for the safety-related pumps and valves at Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2.

The licensee has stated that the ITP for Calvert Cliffs Unit I will comply with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, 1974 Edition, and Addenda through Summer 1975, except as addressed in the enclosed evaluation. This program began on May 8,1975 and will terminate on May 8, 1985. The licensee has stated that the ITP for Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 will comply with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, 1977 Edition, and Addenda through Summer 1978, except as addressed in the enclosed evaluation. This program began on August 1, 1980 and will terminate on April 1, 1987.

The enclosed evaluation of the Calvert Cliffs ITP addresses the code reliefs which have been requested by BG&E.

The NRC has provided the following relief from ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section XI:

o relief from the observation of certain pump performance parameters since these parameters are not readily observable or are meaning-

less, l

o relief from pump high differential pressure alert and action levels l

in that overly tight levels result in unnecessary pump testing, I

o relief from monthly pump performance tests; safety related pumps are to be run monthly and performance tested quarterly, o relief from valve exercising where:

(1) if the valve is in its safety-related positinq and not required to change position for safe shutdown of the plant or following an accident, no valve exercising is required, or (2) if the valve is required to be operated for safe shutdown of the plant or following an accident, alternate testing has been reviewed and found to be acceptable.
