Attention:

Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 4 Division of Operating Reactors United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Reid:

Enclosed are five (5) copies of the Inservice Inspection Program for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit No. I submitted in compliance with the revised 10CFR50.55a(g) dated November 8, 1979. This program submittal replaces the previous Davis-Besse Unit No. I submittals concern-ing Inservice Inspection which were Serial Nos. 307 and 402 (dated June 27, 1977 and November 22, 1977, respectively). The information presented in this update program has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI of the 1977 Edition through the Summer 1978 Addenda. The program is composed of four (4) sections, these being:

Section 1 - Pumps Section 2 - Valves i

Section 3 - Welds (including supports, components and bolting)

Section 4 - System Pressure Tests i

The Inservice Inspection Program will be applicable for the remainder of the 120-month interval, which started on June 27, 1977 after which

\\[

the program will be reviewed at.d updated, as appropriate, with that Edition of the Code and Addenda in effect not more than 12 months prior

\\

to the start up of the next 120-month interval.

\\j The pump test requirements for all safety related pumps (both those h

s tested per ASME Code,Section XI Subsection IWP, and those for which 4

code requirements have been found to be impractical) are presented in Section 1 by a coded pump test program table. The codes used for 1

this table are defined in this section. This section also provides

[

justification for exceptions taken to code test requirements as provided for in 10CFR50.55a(g)(iii).

. The Valve Test requirements for all safety related valves (both those tested per ASME Code,Section XI, Subsection IWV, and those valves for which the code requirements have been found to be impractical),

are presented in Section 2 by coded Valve Test program tables, these codes are defined in this section. Justification for exceptions taken to code test requirements as provided for in 10CFR50.55a(g)(5)(iii) are addressed. Two types of justifications are provided. The first is general in nature and pertains to requirements found t) be impractical for all valves. The second type is used to justify code exceptions for specific valves.

Section 3 presents weld, support and bolting requirements for all piping and component welds, supports and bolting within the boundaries of safety related systems (both those welds, supports and bolting exsmined in accordance with the requirements of ASME Section XI, Subsections IWB, IWC, and IWD, as appropriate and those for which the code require-ments have been found to be impractical). All Class 3 welds and supports will be examined per table IWD-2500-1 of the ASME Code. The examination shall be conducted to the extent practicable within the limitations of the component, or system portion, design and geometry.

The System Pressure Test for all safety related systems are to be con-ducted in accordance with Table IWB-2500-1, Table IWC-2500-1 or Table IWD-5000, as appropriate, per ASME Code Section XI.

This is adcsessed in Section 4 of our submittal.

Detailed exceptions from testing or examination requirements are specif-ically identified in Sections 1, 2 and 3 of the program. However, additions that become necessary, due to modifications and changes to this program during the course of the 120-month interval, which do not meet the code testing requirements will be implemented as needed.

NhC notification will follow these changes.

Yours very truly, ff
