Dear Mr. Ippolito:

In response to Mr. Brian Grimes' latter of July 16, 1979, requesting information on Target Rock safety / relief valves at 1.he Brunswick Steam Electric Plant Unit Nos. 1 and 2, Carolina Power & Light Company submits the following information:

What is the status of each of the Target Rock safety / relief valves at your plant (s)?

Are they in their original design configuration?

CP&L Response: Yea b.

What is the existing simmer margin?

CP&L Response:

100, 110, and 120 psig (setpoints at 1105, 1115 and 1125 psig; normal operating pressure is 1005 psig).

What modifications have you implemented to improve reliability?

c.

CP&L Response:

Increase setpoint (si=mer margin) by 25 psig.

CP&L Response: Unit No. 2 - June 1978; Unit No. 1 - 360036 September 1978.

What main'cenance and testing do you routinely perform on these valves and how often is it performed?

CP&L Response:

(1) PT 19.4 verifies setpoint, inspect and rebuild pilot assembly; 18 months.

(2) PT 11.1.2 verifies operability of ADS valves; 18 months.

What additional modifications and/or maintenance do you plan to implement in the future?

CP&L Response: None at present. We are observing and evaluating performance of the new two-stage topworks being tried at several other BWR's.

4.

On what date will the modification (s) and/or maintenance in Item 3 be implemented?

CP&L Response: Not applicable.
