Carolina Power & Light Company was scheduled to perform examinations of licensed personnel, in accordance with 10 CFR 55.59(a), during the May through June 1990 time period. On April 30, 1990, scheduled Licensed Operator Requalification (LOR) examinations of selected crews were initiated with concurrent evaluation by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. As a result of these examinations, the Brunswick Training Program was determined to be unsatisfactory for Licensed Operator Requalification in May 1990. 'this has delayed the examination schedule for the remaining licensed individuals. The Company plans to complete the remaining portions of the required examinations for these individuals during October through December 1990.

Based on weaknesses identified during the NRC LOR examinations, accelerated simulator training was provided to the Operations personnel. This training stressed the following areas:

1. E0P flow chart usage.

2. Command and control within the control room.

3. Communications.

4. ECCS system operation, concentrating on system logic.

5. Control board manipulations.

Following this accelerated training, the NRC administered Operationni Evaluations to specified Operations personnel to establish their qualification for licensed activities. To reinforce the accelerated training, Operations personnel are presently receiving additional intensive training includd.ng the same areas as those stressed by the accelerated training. This intensive retraining process is scheduled to be completed by October 1990, at which time administration of the remaining examinations will commence.

In addition to the extensive training being provided, each operator who is currently approved to stand watch in the Control Room has either passed the LOR examination administered in May 1990, was approved for watch standing by the NRC based on an Operational Evaluation, or was licensed by the NRC in late 1989.
