DOCKET NO. 50 324/ LICENSE NO. DPR.62 NRC REQUEST FOR REC 1RCUIATION PIPE VELDS j Gentlemen l

In a letter dated October 10, 1989, from Mr. E. C. Tourigny (NRC) to I Mr. L. W. Eury (CP&L), the NRC requested Cf6L to consider providing weld [

samples to Brookhaven National Laborator', (SNL) for metallurgical examination.  :

The candidate velas for examination are the Unit 2 riser velds 12BRK2, 12BRJ2,  !

12BRK3,12BRJ3, and 12BRC4 and safe.er.d to nozzle weld 12ARE5.

In response to your request, Caroitua Power 6 Light Company (CP6L) provided  ;

BNL with four velds for metallurgf cal examination. These four velds are 12BRJ2,12BRJ3,12BRK3 and 12BRC4. Requested weld 12BRK2 is being retained by i CP&L for metallurgical examination by the Harris E6E Center. The veld 12ARE5 '

is not provided since it was r.ecessary to destroy this weld during the removal process, t n

The four velds provided te BNL for metallurgical examination were cut approximately three inches on either side of the weld overlay. Each eeld sample was stamped with an ID number, and an arrow indicating the direction of '

flow. 6 Mr. Carl Czajkowski, (BNL) requested that CP6L also provide any available Ultrasonic Testing Records on the respective weld samples. A package was  !

assembled and given to Mr. Czajkowski during his visit to the Brunswick Plant  ;

site on December 6, 1989. The requested welds were shipped to Brookhaven i

National Laboratories on March 1, 1990. l t

We hope that these veld samples provide adequate metallurgical examination l data for your program.  ;
