Dear Sirs:

RETRACTION OF DISCHARGE REPORT*

PUBLIC SERVICE EL~CTRIC AND GAS (PSE&G)

SALEM GENERATING STATION (CASE #92-01-24-0855-21)

On January 24, 1992, PSE&G reported a spill at the Salem Generating station of approximately 2 gallons of hydraulic fluid.

The fluid leaked from a ruptured hydraulic line on a PSE&G 90 ton crane to the paved area west of the Unit 1 containment adjacent to the Fuel Handling Building. The discharge was reported to the NJDEPE Hotline in accordance with the requirements of NJAC 7:1E-5 and was assigned Case No. 92-01-24-0855-21 by Operator No. 18.

PSE&G believes that it acted in accordance with the intent of NJAC 7:1E-5, which requires all major facilities to notify NJDEPE of discharges of petroleum and other potentially hazardous substances in any concentration to the ground or waters of the State. However, upon investigation, PSE&G has determined that there was no discharge to the environment. All hydraulic fluid was contained within the paved area surrounding the crane. The fluid was immediately cleaned up and disposed of as hazardous waste. Therefore, PSE&G was not obligated to notify the NJDEPE since the incident did not constitute a discharge to the ground or waters of the State.

At approximately 1020 hours0.0118 days
0.283 hours
0.00169 weeks
3.8811e-4 months
of the same day, a follow-up phone call was placed to Mr. Armand Minardi of the the Southern Bureau of Water and Hazardous Waste Enforcement to retract the spill report. This letter serves as confirination of that retraction.
