OPERA"QNG EXCEPTIONS DETAILED J.,. ('I.I On February 2, 3, and 4, 1997, Salem Unit #1 (FACA) exceeded the maximum daily temperature Page 2 limitation of 15.3 C. The maximum differential temperature was 18.4 C and the flow ranged from 15.8 MGD to 16.5 MGD. The discharge was through DSN FACA to the Delaware River.

Salem Unit #1 was not operating during this period and no circulating water pumps were operating. The elevated differential temperature was caused by a low service water flow (due to low river temperatures) and internal plant heat loads from the Reator Auxiliaries Cooling Water system. An additional service water pump was started to increase the cooling water flow, thereby reducing the differential temperature. There was no significant threat to human health or the environment caused by this discharge. The operational monitoring procedure has been modified to increase monitoring of differential temperature during periods when no circulating water pumps are operating.

Reported TRC values of <0.0lppm have been changed to <0.lppm for compliance with accepted NJDEP's permit lower limit of detection (lld) values. Salem's Wallace and Tiernan equipment is qualified to a lld of O.Olppm TRC.
