TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL COLUMBIA GENERATING STATION LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATIONS SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Energy Northwest (the applicant), held telephone conference calls on September 12, 2011, to discuss the following draft request for additional information (RAI) concerning the Columbia Generating Station (Columbia) license renewal application (LRA).

Draft RAI 4.2-7: Related to the upper shelf energy of the N 12 nozzle forging Discussion:

The staff discussed the need for the applicant to provide a technical basis for initial upper shelf energy (USE) values of 62 ft-Ib and copper content of 0.27 percent for SA-508 Class 1 forgings material, which can be verified by the staff, in order for the applicant to demonstrate that the USE value for the N12 nozzle forgings will not pass below 50 ft-Ibs prior to the period of extended operation.

The applicant understands the staff's concern and will submit the SA-508 Class 1 raw data and calculations to the NRC so that the staff can verify the results. Some of the information is proprietary, so the applicant will submit an affidavit to redact proprietary information from being viewed by the public. A non-proprietary version of the document will be available to the public.

The staff will send an RAI.
