)hn White - Status report for July 31 Page 2 Indian Point Energy Center Status Report July 31, 2006 Operational Status

  • Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% power and has been on line 74 days. Indian Point Unit 3 is also at 100% reactor power and has been on line 10 days.

Entergy Endorses Industry Initiative on Groundwater Reporting oEntergy announced today that the company is moving ahead with an industry initiative aimed at enhancing reporting to stakeholders on groundwater contamination issues. The initiative was sponsored by NEI, a nuclear industry trade group. Consistent with industry reporting guidelines, Entergy will report to key stakeholders as well as the NRC, when there is an unintentional on-site radiological leak or spill into groundwater. The company will report such occurrences within one business day. We will report to the NRC within four hours of reporting to stakeholders.

This industry initiative stemmed from detection of elevated tritium levels in late 2005 and early 2006 at some nuclear plants including Indian Point. No release has posed a health or safety hazard to residents of the surrounding areas or to plant employees, according to state and federal officials. Indian Point test samples have shown that no off-site wells have activity above background levels.

Since groundwater contamination was detected at Indian Point in the fall of 2005, Entergy has established a comprehensive program to assess sources and pathways, review site operating history, assess site geo-hydrology and develop a conceptual model of groundwater flow, and installed new monitoring wells on site. An update on the groundwater investigation at Indian Point can be found on the New York State Emergency Management Office website. SEMO JIC
